Utrecht (18 December) - A new guideline from the Dutch medical association, the KNMG, stipulates that female patients have the right to refuse a male doctor. The guideline was drawn up following an incident in a hospital in Amersfoort last summer. A Muslim woman and her husband refused treatment by the male gynecologist on duty. As a result the woman was taken to another hospital. The KNMG says hospitals should do their best to meet the wishes of patients. The right to demand a female doctor is only waived in emergencies. Many doctors think the organisation has gone too far to accommodate the wishes of Muslims. The conservative VVD has called the health minister Ab Klink and Integration Minister Ella Vogelaar to the Lower House over the issue.
