I think "cooperation" in preceding discussion is conflated with trust. We behave in certain ways so we can trust each other.

I become sometimes confused and always untrusting when the other side of a transaction apparently stops looking after its self-interest. Cliches like "too good to be true" pop into my mind.

We can't know with certainty what the other thinks so the only sensible stance to take is that it acts in its self-interest.
