Don't forget many other things, which we simply take for granted, while most people living on this planet can only dream about them -- like, a stable political system, the rule of law which is enforced quite equitably, rather than selectively, the First Amendment. Americans are an ethical people, who still respect a contract and a handshake. Despite recent discombobulations, we still have a resilient and highly developed financial system; we do not have to bring bags of cash to a brokerage in order to open an account. Respect for individual rights. There are many intangibles in our general, political and economic cultures which have been crucial to the success of this nation in the past and will remain so in the future... and which, as most of the emerging world will inevitably discover, are a critical ingredient needed for a society to be truly developed.

Well said, KyrosL. It is time we had some posts like yours to put things into perspective. The criticism of American business, economy and currency has gotten all out of kilter to reality. China is doing great for China but, least we forget that, we couldn't be having the kind of open criticism and analysis of China's business and economy, let alone their political actions, if we lived in China without the fear of governmental retaliation. regards Ray

Are you aware that we fall short by 1 trillion dollars per year in paying our foreign bills? Are you aware that Boeing could not make a plane in the US -- tell me what percent of a Boeing plane is made in the US? As for design, I agree, that is the truly value added part of the process -- but do you think that the design of a Boeing plane is "American". Do you understand that the design of Boeing plane is global? Do you understand that Boeing needs it to be global because they need to, they can, and they do tap into smart people all over the world? Do you know that Boeing is rapidly expanding on its already large global footprint of design and production by establishing a new design center in Russia? As for markets, we are rapidly losing our place as the worlds biggest market. China took over long ago as the largest market for things like cell phones and is rapidly becoming the worlds largest market for cars -- etc., etc.. Companies like google will depend on non-US markets for a growing part of their income and they already are farming out work to non-US people to allow their group into new markets. When you use words like "trinkets" you turn the conversAtion into a farce -- my words might seem harsh, but you simply cannot expect to be treated with respect for your understanding of the world in which you live when you dismiss the facts of life in a global economy and refer to the trillions of dolars of things we import and rely on every day as "trinkets" that we do not need. Take it as an unfair insult if you must, but it is a truly ignorant point fo view as far as I am concerned. It is your way of not having to grasp the reality of a global economy, and our precarious place in that global economy if we don't play our cards right. And right now, we are playing a losing hand in terms of our finances.
