OK, I understand your position in New Zealand.

In the US we have taxes on dividends and taxes on capital gains, and the proposed consumption tax is not more than the taxes on those. You may be right that some current US retirees may pay a bit more, but I wouldn't worry too much about them. The typical US retiree today gets a lot more from Social Security and Medicare than he paid during his work days -- time value adjusted.
