Employers simply won't hire if it costs them more to do so than the return in profit.

Exactly. If we do get a serious recession (as has been so extensively advertised), the minimum wage will slow down the recovery. The way things stand today, with the unemployment being low, the min. wage is little more than a legacy populist gimmick. The vast majority of people able and willing to work can do better than the min. wage.

OT - bought a few of those new "twisted" light bulbs. Walmart had only the less expensive, weaker selections. And still, they are quite impressive. They say that a 23 watt bulb gives as much light as a 100W regular bulb - and it does. And they remain cool. I think they are a must at least in enclosed light fixtures, where the heat burns out bulbs quickly. I also put some in fixtures where "normally" they do not recommend anything above 60W.

Will buy some stronger ones on line. Thanks for bringing this up.

i doubt minimum wage has accomplished any economic impact in this area mid atlantic. most stores cannot hire help.. help wanted signs are out all the time at wages starting around $8. and they cannot hire people. I am talking about the wal marts, gas and go grocery stores, 711, etc etc... i go bye several service stations with posted signs all along the road in several years i have yet to drive bye and not see help wanted sign on its property. the turn over is high, of course shift work has something to do with it.. transportation perhaps from inner city to suburbs.?

before a company hires , it usually will max out overtime vs paying more in benefits, like health care , insurance, 401k program, vacation.
