The nature of progress is that more and more intelligence can be manufactured for less and less. As transportation prices increase and robots get smarter and smarter, the manufacture of more complex items becomes more competitive closer to the consuming market.

I have read stories about sock making. All socks are made using sock robots, but the end must be sewn and currently a human does it. I saw a factory on How it's made. It seems that socks are now made south of the border because the labor to sew the socks is cheaper.

I would guess eventually someone can make a smart sock sewing robot and then the economic equations changes.

Have you been in a toy store, a furniture store or wal-mart lately?

I bought my daughter a very nice pair of shearling slippers from LL Bean for Christmas.

Label on the box?

"Made in China."
