Plastics don't have to be made from oil. organic matter of most any type can be a feedstock, it is just currently more expensive. Now, true, we need to solve the energy problem before that could go much further, but that is a given.

It wouldn't surprise me if in the not too distant future, oil is used almost exclusively for plastic and rarely for energy.
