Once you go to national elections, the results of all state races become irrelevant and the national vote will give a much more clear cut picture of winners and losers. You would have to have some rules for minority winners, especially if there are major third parties involved. A runoff in the US would be very hard to implement. So losing the EC might actually encourage third parties.
