Bob - they are scrubbers. The gas is absorbed in a liquid. For SO2 the gas is reacted to either Calcium Sulfate or Sulfite. CO2 is absorbed using amine solutions. It is then thermally removed as a gas from the solution and the solution is reused. The energy utilization is significant.

The term filter implies something simple - trust me it is not. Understanding this critical to a thorough discussion of the issue.

Look - you seem to want to have a realistic approach to the complexity of the issue. The alarmists do not care a lick about how to do it. On this basis one must question their motivations!
