On anti missile defence, it seems that the attackers have the ability to overcome defenders which is unlike the usual situation where defenders have the better position. Hence the MAD mutual destruction pacts of the Cold War. Let's suppose a more or less roughly approximate technology base. Attackers can launch lots of identical-looking rockets, 90% of which are just a cheap tube with rocket fuel and dummy "bombs". When into space, they can all deploy MIRVs [multiple independently targeted re-entry vehicles] which also look the same as each other. Say there are 10,000 such MIRVs approaching. 1,000 are real. But the real ones don't ring a bell or shine a light saying which ones they are. The defenders therefore have to launch 15,000 rockets to defend against them because each incoming RV will be widely spaced from others heading for different places or coming from different directions to the same places. Some defending rockets will miss, fail to launch etc, so better to have sufficient to do the job. 1,000 real incomings versus 15,000 real defenders could be quite a problem for the cost situation of the defenders. Similarly, an aircraft carrier defending Taiwan could find lots of fake incomings are overwhelming though the relative costs wouldn't be so bad as a well-aimed machine gun firing cheap bullets would be much cheaper than rockets which have to be launched from quite a long way away unless they sneak up in little unmanned submarines. It is probably a good idea to avoid wars with seriously armed people. The likes of Saddam and Iran are okay. China is probably doable too and since China has promised war against Taiwan unless Taiwanese opt for slavery, it would be reasonable to get in first before they make a first strike. The year of the rat is an auspicious time for such a conflict. It was disappointing that the Year of the Rooster passed without finding out who would become a feather duster. Merry Christmas to you too. Peace on Earth and Goodwill to all. BTW, those F15s and military people around the world should get Globalstar equipment when it's up and running properly. Already there is the excellent SPOT service. amazon.com Mqurice
