He was being clever. The rules do allow one change of pick per season. He might even reasonably argue that he didn't make his picks, or that the opposite of no picks is not no picks, but even if both of those ideas are shot down he still gets one change.

OTOH you also have one change so that could complicate the issue.

If your feeling really generous, you could pick the teams you think will win and hope to hit at least one, the odds are in your favor. But I'm not in any way saying that you must be that generous, or are doing something wrong but not submitting your picks first.

It may be better to just go with you both PMing your picks in.
