Actually Cro Magnons are humans. MtDNA from two Cro Magnon skeletons was haplogroup N.
en.wikipedia.org

Differed from present day humans by being more robust and larger cranial capacity. The circumference of my head (and my sons) is 62 cm and we are robust, so I feel a close relationship to Cro Magnons.

Western Europeans were all forced to the extreme edge of the continent by the last glacial maximum, and those were the Cro Magnons. Given that Y chromosome DNA doesn't appear to have changed much since then for the Atlantic modal haplogroups, it doesn't make sense that the Cro Magnons went away. We're still here.
