Why are they raiding employers place and carting people away? I will tell you why because you don't know:

Really... and you have known me for many years Elmat...? I am not so arrogant or presumptuous to lecture you about Brazil or Iran, perhaps you could afford me the same courtesy, especially since you know little of my background concerning US immigration policies. I reiterate my statement that for you to compare US Homeland security to the Nazis is a ridiculous syllogism. If the US were like Nazi Germany the photo you referenced (9 months old I'll add.. these things don't happen that regularly...) would never have been available to the public. I guess the more draconian policies of multiple other countries in regards to handling illegal immigrants don't seem to warrant your interest. My knowledge regarding US immigration..? I have helped multiple people with INS paperwork, I actually know someone who was caught up in a raid, a friend of 24 years now works for Homeland Security, and my mother lives 8 miles from the Southern US border and knows a border patrol agent (she likes this person but generally dislikes most of the border patrol...) and has many stories about what's happening on the border. But you Elmat, from your vantage point in Brazil (or Iran..) somehow through your brilliance have been able to see through press releases and photo ops (and yes that raid was a photo op... operation round up the usual suspects..) can somehow have more knowledge about Homeland Security than me.

There were a flurry of raids before a immigrant normalization/amnesty bill that was sent to the US Congress and Senate this summer. Hence the timing in March I believe was quite suspect. Michael Chertoff, head of US Homeland, security basically stated that the raids were conducted to show that they were not a viable way of solving the illegal immigration issue in the US. I suppose you knew there were more raids in the six years immediately preceding the formation of Homeland Security than after it was created... or no.. I am thinking you didn't know that..

As for the raids yeah, they're ridiculous and all for political fodder.. there are much better (and more benign and cheaper..) ways of solving the issue but it entails enforcing laws against employers not the immigrants. There have been attempts to strengthen laws to check for the legality of people working in the US... the law was passed but challenged in court by the ACLU and the US Chamber of Commerce... now that is what I would call strange bedfellows. Simply put the wealthy and powerful on both sides of the Southern US border do not want immigration laws enforced.... I think they'll continue get their way.
