couldn't the water be redistributed to the land via thunderstorms? or perhaps some other dynamic?

Geeze, given the blast of polar air that the computer models predicted couldn't happen, all you global tree huggers better get out your oil burning stoves for the express purpose of preparing for the cold, especially on the east coast. You think you got it bad now? It's blizzard time. You have have about 72 hours to prepare. And make sure you cut down that heritage tree that the socialists won't let you touch. You'll need it when the oil runs out.
