For saving face, won't they do a dual mode handset that masks the TD deficiencies?

I'm assuming that all of the handsets will be TD-SCDMA/EDGE. They can allow consumers to force them into EDGE/GSM mode, and many would do so, but that wont change the fact that they will be substantially larger, cost more, and still have worse battery life than an EDGE only handset.

The only way I see TD-SCDMA becoming a force is if it is the only 3G technology allowed by the government. It will still take several years, but by 2010/11 I could see them having optimised the handsets enough to compete.

OTOH, if TD-SCDMA is the only 3G technology allowed by the Chinese government, it means that none of the other companies have any chance of breaking China Mobile's stranglehold over telecom. I have no idea if breaking that monopoly is a priortity for the government, but a TD-SCDMA only policy will insure its continued existence.
