Russia's energy resources give it massive economic influence over its former Soviet satellites and, increasingly, over the European Union And yet, Russias GDP is the equivalent of the state of New Jersey....imagine that Irans gdp on the scale of Alabama....... What these writers are attempting to do is use their bully pulpits to posture strength where there is none. The fact of the matter is, russia and iran are non economies because of thier oligarchic hegemony imposed on resources by governing elites. Its like bobo in venezuela waking up one morning to the realization that the country has natural resources, used by global markets, he then extrapolates his politics into the equation, converting natural resources to national resources with him as arbiter, it is all extrapolated self interest. deserving no admiration what so ever. What a joke these guys are, a genuine coalition of robbers.......that is how a clear mind uninfected with politics sees it. Afraid of their own peoples abilities, they puff up their chests expelling their; we are so going to smother you rhetoric, and yet, their own NON economies flounder under the weight of their own throwback leadership. Did you ever wonder why there are always so many people milling around in shots of pakistan or a dozen other middle east countries? its because they are non economies too. The very structures of these societies build upon generations of hegemony......whether its religion, or clan, or by political party, the whole lot of them are run to dysfunctional purposes. Only Liberty can correct their particular diseases. The infection is the noneconomy metrics of the self interested few, the proud the deluded.
