Thanks for the list, ksuave. I'm going to print it out and use it to overhaul my Netflix cue.

I watched a couple historical dramas recently that were well done, and involved remarkable people that I hadn't really heard of before.

Happy New Year to all.
Max

Strike
Inspired by a true story, this powerful drama tells the tale of an ordinary woman who helps spark a revolution in Poland. Single mother Agnieszka (Katharina Thalbach) works as a shipyard welder. Concerned about dangerous working conditions, she speaks up -- to no avail. But after an accident kills several employees, and their families are denied pension benefits, she steps up her activities, laying the foundation for the Solidarity movement.

Amazing Grace
Based on a true story, this historical drama starring Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four) tells the story of William Wilberforce, an 18th-century English politician who fought for the abolition of slavery. Despite staunch opposition, Wilberforce waged an aggressive campaign using boycotts, petitions and slogans. Director Michael Apted's (Coal Miner's Daughter) powerful film also stars Albert Finney, Michael Gambon and Rufus Sewell.

Thanks for the rundown. Looks like you have more good ones to add to my queue.

Killer Kane - "New York Doll"

I watched "No End in Sight" the other day. It was very well done, but I thought my head would explode.

I'd also like to say thanks for the great post. I'm looking for something to rent for tomorrow night, something that will keep me awake. New Year's Eve usually means Dad Picks Up Son(s) From Party at Some Ungodly Hour, so I especially appreciate the dvd recommendations. I was leaning towards The Last King of Scotland.

I thought you might enjoy this review of Eastern Promises:

"An orgy of slit throats, lopped digits and a naked fight scene that will tattoo itself on to your brain."

Oh yeah, I forgot to say congrats on turning 60, which reminds me that I just watched a great documentary you might like called, "The Boys of 2nd Street Park" about a group of boys that grew up near Coney Island playing basketball in a park in the 60's and what happened to their lives after that. I really enjoyed it and I think it would be right up your alley. It's running on Showtime.

I'm seeing clips of Juno for the first time right now. Looks terrific. I might just have to <gasp> go to the movies to see it. :)
