tax on loans defaulted and forgiven cannot be good public policy, especially given that it was the government that engendered the situation where lots and lots are going bankrupt

otoh, taxes will go short, and when so, all will pay, because all must

it is tough when the pie shrinks, and even if disguised by monetary inflation, the pie is most assuredly shrinking
