Nadine here is an excerpt from dithers very interesting and informative post....please note the author specifies "academicians teaching science at universities" as opposed to scientists.

"It is more historically accurate to conclude that, although many Jesuits and other clerics opposed Galileo, the main opponents of the new Copernican position were academicians teaching science in the universities, and that much, if not most, of Galileo’s support came from church officials."
