Happy New Year, Chris,

I live in NW Arkansas, so Huckabee is my former governor and he is, indeed, a charmer.

However, many, myself included, called him Gov. Hucksterbee.
He balanced the budget by raising the base sales tax rate 0.0625%, an act which to me is reprehensible in a poor state like mine with a terribly skewed income distribution. Better, imo, to have raised income taxes.

In my county, sales tax went to right under 10% and we pay it on everything....food, drugs, all goods and services.

The thing I hate more though is that Huckabee came into office poor and left fairly affluent, having been given two homes with all the furnishings and at least one fully paid automobile. While in office, he kept being forced by law to give back gifts and/or pay taxes on them.....I think something like 70 ethics violations......it was unseemly, to say the least.

Having said this, I have to admit that he is tremendously likeable and sincere in his own way. I would never vote for him, but I find it wonderful and encouraging for the country that someone with so little campaign funding and organization can capture the public imagination just on the strength of his interviews and debate performances.

And I see Ron Paul in a similar fashion, and I find it equally encouraging. They both are articulating vision and sincerity while the other candidates seem increasingly packaged and plastic. So far this has been a most pleasant surprise coming out of this election process.
