What I meant to write was that it is necessary to prevent convection or the heated gasses will just drift away. In our atmosphere the convection is already blocked by the different layers in the atmosphere

Fundamentally it is gravity which keeps the atmosphere around. The temp difference helps, but remember that the mean gas molecule velocity even for earth's surface temps is WAY below escape velocity. Think about the speed of sound. That is what you have for a given temp. Not orbital velocity by a few miles per second.
