Bacteria? Probably not. They have generations that are measured in, at most, minutes. Usually less. In addition, they are adapted to changing pretty quickly. Not only are there a lot fewer mechanisms to check for transcription errors, they readily swap DNA rings even across genera and species.

The trick is setting up the environment so it is challenging enough to have that as a desirable direction to evolve, but not so challenging they all die.
