A new home is shown under constructionin a Columbus, Ohio subdivision. Sales of new homes plunged last month to their lowest level in more than 12 years in the U.S. -- and MLA Pat Bell fears that will spell a hard year for forestry-dependent northern B.C. (Associated Press) Prince George North MLA Pat Bell is predicting a year of challenges on the region's economic front as the U.S. housing market will continue to struggle in 2008.

"It'll probably be half the size of what it historically has been over the last number of years and therefore we will need to be the half of the marketplace that is competitive," he said.

On the mining front, he expects the total spent on exploration for 2007 will have reached $300 million, compared to $25 million in 2001, and believes it's only a matter of time before it translates into new mines.

The possibilities around the Prince Rupert container terminal, CN's intermodal terminal and the Prince George Airport will start coming into play, said Bell, "but it's going to be a year full of challanges and I think it's going to take real leadership to pull us through. . . it will not be one of the easier years that we've had."

Asked how the provincial government can help, Bell said continuing to lead trade missions into the Asian marketplace, removing red tape and making sure companies have access to the resources they need are among the steps that can be taken.

Initiatives Prince George president Gerry Offet agreed with Bell's take on the forestry sector while also seeing potential in the transportation sector.

He said the economic development organization will do some "very heavy duty and significant marketing into the warehousing, transportation and logistics industries, selling Prince George as an alternative for shipping goods to Asia and also distributing goods in western Canada and the western United States."

Prince George Chamber of Commerce president Garth Frizzell was more upbeat, saying he's taking a cautiously optimistic approach to the year ahead.

"If this same kind of downturn happened 10 years ago, this city would be in a lot tougher strait than it is now," he said.

The unemployment rate remains low and he's expecting employers will still have to contend with job shortages.

He is also anticipating quality of life issues -- air quality, services for seniors and the proposed performing arts centre -- will be major topics when the civic elections are held in November.

'Eskay Creek silver mine is slated to shut down this year' - poof and they're gone, gee time zipped right along for Eskay ... lot of money made there

Need some new mines, for sure, and they're right there waiting to be made ... best get at it too, because they take considerable time to make

Had another brief conversation about the woods today, companies cutting contract rates, and the general crap you have to go through ... not worth it, it's like mining was in the late nineties, got to go through a lost period before it gets better ... and this is without bugkill, throw that in and you can pretty much forget it for your kids too

[edit] - hey we're typing at the same time - ng.to, tuo.v, cuu.v, rg.v, lym.v, i'm going to look close at all these ... Copper Fox treated me really well last year, jack likes Romios and i think Tom Drivas is alright, they're doing a flow-through right now so a special little buy opp may come, hmm ... cheap enough anyway, and when they get going they really go ... yes NovaGold even, i rarely get interested in that size of market cap but it should lead the pack if/when new ideas in re GC arrive[?] ... plus it's marginable, there's the kicker [i'm always into it right to the nuts in these weeks of the winter, lol]

Beautiful country up there, i haven't spent near enough time north of the highway to Rupert to know it ... slept a few nights on the porch of a ranchhouse north of Smithers one time, in twenty below weather, clear as a bell, that was special
