I remember years ago reading somewhere that inflation was "a process in which all branches of the government cooperate." Hemingway (not exactly known as an economist) said something like: "When governments get into trouble they cause inflation. When they are still in trouble they start wars." No-- here it is (hooray again for Google): ERNEST HEMINGWAY "The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities."
