I don't know but we're not talking about very many people here. Off the top of my head:

Republican politicians who have been entertainers - Reagan, Arnold, Thompson, Sonny Bono. Have no idea who Jerry Doyle is - apparently not too prominent an example. Clint Eastwood - but he only ran for a local office.

Independents - Kinky Friedman (though he never got elected to anything, nor will he), Jesse Ventura.

Jerry Springer was a politician whose career ended because he was dumb enough to use his credit card at a massage parlor, then he went into the talk show biz. Warren Beatty has talked about running for office. Al Franken is going to I think.

Most entertainment liberals are so far to the loony side of the leftwing, they could never be elected to anything - not even in CA.

I can also think of Republican politicians who have been doctors (Bill Frist, Ron Paul). Businessmen - Romney (both the elder and the younger Romney), George Bush (both of them too). A minister - Huckabee. A military leader - Eisenhower.

Of the postwar Republican Presidents, most entered politics after achieving some success in other areas of life. Only Nixon had the typical law/career politician background.

I think its a good thing to have some politicians who have been something other than career pols and lawyers.

What are some Democrats with entertainment, business, military, or other non-typical backgrounds? Am I missing some?
