Intel is developing chips now with multiple cores that no one knows how to write programs for. That's why every new computer you buy is supposed to be X times faster, but seems to be the same speed as your last one.

The bottom line is the fundamentals, and right now, fossil fuels are still fundamentally cheaper and better than solar and wind energy, barring the environmental impact. You would have to place a very heavy preventative tax on fossil fuels in order to make solar and wind energy cost-competitive.
