These guys and the BLS need to get their story straight.

ADP Report Indicates Weak Job Growth
The latest employment report from Automatic Data Processing suggests further deterioration in the job market in December.

The payroll giant said private nonfarm payroll employment rose by a seasonally adjusted 40,000 between November and December. Adding in 19,000 government jobs (the average monthly gain over the last year) would put the total nonfarm payroll increase at 59,000 for the month. Economists on average are expecting total gains closer to 70,000 for December.

The figures are compiled by the forecasting firm Macroeconomic Advisers using ADP payroll data covering about 24 million workers. The report over the last year has become a better predictor of trends in the Labor Department’s monthly employment report, though some estimates have been way off. The ADP report on November employment indicated a gain of 189,000 private nonfarm jobs (revised down to 173,000 today), while the Labor Department report showed a gain of 94,000 jobs for that month.

ADP said service-sector jobs grew by 71,000 in December, while goods-producing employment fell by 31,000. The battered housing-related sectors took more hits. Construction employment fell by 17,000, the thirteenth straight monthly decline that brought the total drop in construction jobs to 199,000 since the peak in August 2006. Employment in the financial sector declined by 5,000, hit by the downturn in mortgage lending. –Sudeep Reddy
