He is talking about the difficulty of writing multi-threaded programs. But, as you point out, there is some benefit from multiple cores even without multi-threaded applications. However, there is a limit beyond which more cores can be useful.

No, I meant multiple cores that require multiple threads to be fully utilized. Only a very few games take limited advantage of them.
