And Yes the South was another country and Lincoln invaded it.

Pomp, I kinda hate to get into the bickering, but I have to support Long'un on the "another country" issue.

The Confederate states were in rebellion, and WERE another country. The Union had no control over them, just as during the American Revolution, England had no control over America. In both instances, the rebels declared their independence, and by force of arms asserted themselves as independent countries. And, in both instances, foreign countries considered them as independent countries, complete with ambassadors and separate heads of state.

The Emancipation Proclamation was issued as an Executive Order, with full knowledge that it could not be enforced. Its only real purpose was to attempt to incite rebellion of the slaves in the affected states.
