TJ,
I'm always puzzled about the issue of spending it. Even one oz. coins would be pretty cumbersome... and then to borrow a line from Arlo Guthrie.. what about all the... Group W's out there ? Might they not try and appropriate... The masses are now starting to think about more fuel efficient vehicles again because fuel costs slap them in the face almost daily... ... but not about accumulating gold.. Here on SI and iHub etc.. those thoughts abound but this is still a tiny microcosm, not likely representative of the gen pop...

the process may take 20-30 years, A generation and more... Coconut and my Little Big Man (yes from the movie) will be in their primes.. my young princess warily eyeing middle age... A very long time... with new ideas and habitudes that will take hold while the the world as we know it may never be again then IYO ?

You are a gloomy gus LOL... Now if this all transpires... there must also be plan to change the gold into something else (the exit strategy) ? At some point it will surely resume it's function as a beautiful anchor (as in holding back progress not protection from financial drift :o).. I thought you were ultimately more upbeat on China ? Would that preclude some of this anticipated pain... or will the pain be more a Western experience ? Relatively ?

Now I got a brief gold lesson from SwampDog on CD's thread and engaged in some quick Wikpedia correspondence classes :O)
I discovered that the US has by far the most reported gold reserves. Now per SwampDog .. 50X appreciation in the gold price is not out of the realm of possibility per siliconinvestor.com.

I'm still trying to figure out from up here teetering on the fence how much gold is enough.. If I decide it is fine as insurance.. I tossed out a 5% of PF (about one normal stock position based on 2006 PF value) but in retrospect I have no idea if that even makes sense...

And I, I walked over to the, to the bench there, and there is, Group W's
where they put you if you may not be moral enough to join the army after
committing your special crime, and there was all kinds of mean nasty ugly
looking people on the bench there. Mother rapers. Father stabbers. Father
rapers! Father rapers sitting right there on the bench next to me! And
they was mean and nasty and ugly and horrible crime-type guys sitting on the
bench next to me. And the meanest, ugliest, nastiest one, the meanest
father raper of them all, was coming over to me and he was mean 'n' ugly
'n' nasty 'n' horrible and all kind of things and he sat down next to me
and said, "Kid, whad'ya get?" I said, "I didn't get nothing, I had to pay
$50 and pick up the garbage." He said, "What were you arrested for, kid?"
And I said, "Littering." And they all moved away from me on the bench
there, and the hairy eyeball and all kinds of mean nasty things, till I
said, "And creating a nuisance." And they all came back, shook my hand,
and we had a great time on the bench, talkin about crime, mother stabbing,
father raping, all kinds of groovy things that we was talking about on the
bench. And everything was fine, we was smoking cigarettes and all kinds of
things, until the Sargeant came over, had some paper in his hand, held it
up and said.

the mantra:

"the neat thing about gold is that no one needs to be convinced and turned to consider gold to be money, because it is money, whether folks consider it so or not, unlike the brain deadening drip that is fiat paper"

I like it: it's money because it's money because it's money . . .
except when it's not

When the commodity gold becomes treated as money, then surely, it's buygold time. Like now. Surely, you'll sell when its future is no longer money. Everything has a season.
