I think it was a bit more complicated than that. Lincoln was opposed to slavery, but he would have gone along with it if that were the only thing dividing North and South. Not a whole lot different than the abortion issue now, powerful people acquiescing to something they strongly oppose.

Lincoln did make it clear, though, that he thought the Negro race was inferior to Caucasians.
