Both of the Bushes had the same problem, they couldn't communicate with the people. The press tried to stop Reagan, but he went over their head.

President Bush 41 was aloof, and President Bush 43 is a goof and the President between seemed like a spoof. PGHWB is a good speaker but I think you are correct that he never felt the pulse of the people. I suspect that PGWB is much better at reading the people than his father, but that he is feeling to see how far out in front he can be while he leads. He certainly has adopted some speech patterns that make him seem rather pedestrian.
