Talbots to Exit Kids', Men's Clothes, Cut 800 Jobs
By Heather Burke

Jan. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Talbots Inc., the clothing retailer that lost half its market value last year, will stop selling children's and men's clothing and eliminate 5 percent of its workforce after posting two quarters of losses.

The retailer also said fourth-quarter sales at its namesake and J. Jill chains, which target women 35 and older, are below its expectations.

Talbots will close 78 men's and children's stores and cut 800 jobs. The moves will reduce annual sales by about $100 million and boost earnings by $13 million to $15 million, the Hingham, Massachusetts-based company said today in a statement.

Talbots will focus on bolstering sales at its namesake and J. Jill divisions. Sales at stores open at least a year have fallen for the past year at Talbots, known for tailored suits, blouses and sweaters. The retailer has posted profit declines or losses in the last seven quarters.

Talbots began a review of its operations in October and found that men's and children's clothing didn't have the potential to post an ``acceptable long-term return on investment.'' The retailer plans to complete the study in the first quarter of this year.

The company will record $5 million in costs before taxes in the fourth quarter and take $34 million to $42 million in expenses in the coming year. Talbots will close 66 kids' and 12 men's stores.

Talbots, which operates 1,428 stores, fell 91 cents, or 8.5 percent, to $9.77 at 9:44 a.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The stock dropped 51 percent last year.

The retailer will report fourth-quarter sales on Feb. 7 and earnings on March 12.
