Politicians should know how to talk to voters.
Repeatedly labelling their country a pejorative term usually doesn't result in a lot of votes.

Oh? You think the US is an "empire" of foreign nations?

Help me out on this. What foreign countries do we control? We try (too hard, maybe) to influence other countries, but we certainly don't exercise any direct control over them.

As Colin Powell once said, "the only land we occupy in foreign countries is the graves of our dead who have fallen to help those countries."
