It is impossible for Rudy to make a statemetn without working in something about 9/11..."Is it raining, Rudy?" "Not as hard as on 9/11?"

Rudy Giuliani remains positive despite sinking campaign.
BEDFORD, N.H. - He flatlined in Iowa and he's struggling in New Hampshire, but Rudy Giuliani shook off the early-state blues Thursday as only he can.

"None of this worries me - Sept. 11, there were times I was worried," Giuliani said.

"We're sitting in a pretty good position right now. So we're not worried and not concerned," he told a news conference here. "Maybe other people acted nervous in a situation like this, but this is not unexpected."

Giuliani, whose front-runner status evaporated last month, gave another tutorial on his big-state, late-state plan to win the Republican presidential nomination.

"We were not going to emphasize Iowa in the way that other candidates did," Giuliani said, insisting this was "absolutely no insult to Iowa at all."

Besides, Giuliani said, there'll always be Florida.

"Voting has already started in Florida" by absentee ballot for the Jan. 29 primary there, where his own internal polls show him in the lead, said Giuliani, who flew to Miami later for a rally with anti-Castro Cubans in nearby Hialeah.

Despite the what-me-worry pose, Giuliani aides said there would be a wee-hours, all-hands strategy conference call after the Iowa results.

They planned to brainstorm how to rejigger tactics and deal with the resurgent Sen. John McCain without going negative against Giuliani's 2001 World Series box-seat buddy. McCain has skyrocketed in recent New Hampshire polls.

Giuliani spoke at the Segway LLC plant here, makers of the $5,000 electric scooters, where employee and undecided voter Bill Bannister, 48, of Derry, N.H., wasn't so sure of the Giuliani strategy.

"I was pretty impressed with him," Bannister said, "but I'm a little tossed between Mr. Giuliani and Mr. McCain."

Two plant workers stood on Segways to Giuliani's rear as he began to speak. "Maybe instead of giving a speech I should just ride away on one of these things," Giuliani said with a grin. He grabbed the handlebars but stopped short of climbing aboard.

Re: "Obama and Huckabee and Edwards are easily the best public speakers in this race. They won last night in part because of their ability to connect with people in large settings."

Yes, I agree that's a good point... but I feel it goes beyond mere rhetorical skill.

(For example, although each's rhetorical abilities may be displayed better in one setting over another - such as displayed better in small groups, or long-form discussions, or sound-bite style, etc. - I believe something else is going on.)

Hilary was generally perceived to have 'done well' in certain of the debates (her speaking style coming off relatively well in some of the debate encounters, detailed answers, posed...), and sometimes (more especially early on) Obama was criticized as 'having a long-form, discussion oriented speaking style' that did not display as well in the 15 second and under 'debate' formats that were put on... yet he (& Huckabee, another example, with equally noted shortcomings or speaking gaffs) fairly steadily gained ground.

Dodd and Biden also generally comported themselves well in the debates (as so too did Romney) yet did not ramp-up in support.

IMO, the public was looking for something different then mere rhetorical flashes... I believe they were looking for things like a sense of a personal core... self-effacement and humor... intelligence... a style that seemed less about regurgitating opinion group-tested 'answers', and more about actually listening and trying to reply to voter's questions in a more thoughtful style.

In short: Something THERE there. A personal CORE, not a 'slick suit' pandering on both sides of all issues.
