Crash safety is a big excuse the gas gouging lobby uses to try and scare people into buying large gas guzzlers. It's mostly BS. In fact, we cannot afford to drive around in tanks, but smaller cars can now be built like bumper cards which sustain no damage in any minor accident. In a terrible major accident you're going to be hurt no matter what. Plus all cars have air bags. And if you're driving recklessly it's your fault, not the car model's.
