Here's what happened on the earmark thing.

The (D)'s promised they'd get rid of them but failed. The (R)'s earmarked MUCH worse than the (D)'s, and the people requesting the earmarks didn't even have to put their name on the request! The (D)'s at least got rid of THAT - now every earmark has to have someon's NAME on it. The old line (D) pols and ALL the (R)'s wanted to keep the pork to ladle out at home to constituents - so the (D)'s fell WAY short of getting rid of earmarks.
