To: jim-thompson who wrote (111724 ) 1/5/2008 2:39:14 PM From: Hope Praytochange Respond to of 173976 Etheridge Misses Kucinich By Sarah Wheaton Melissa Etheridge gave us a call today, just to, ya know, chat about politics. “This just sent me over the top,” the singer said. She was referring to Representative Dennis J. Kucinich’s exclusion from tonight’s Democratic debate, which is sponsored by ABC, WMUR-TV and Facebook. “I think that this ABC debate is nothing but an infomercial now,” she said. Mr. Kucinich failed to meet the network’s criteria: A top four finish in Iowa or a showing of at least 5 percent in a national or New Hampshire poll. Asked if she thought the criteria had been consciously designed to exclude the Ohio congressman, Ms. Etheridge replied: “I’m gonna go down and say yeah. It’s easy to do because they don’t have the money, and because their showing is so early in the year. I think it’s easy to just kind of sweep it under the rug.” She said that “corporate interests that have infiltrated the Democratic Party” have marginalized Mr. Kucinich because his stances on issues like the environment, health care and the war go against their interests. “I don’t think this is a conspiracy just against Kucinich,” she said. “I think because he represents this message of populism and change, he and Ron Paul,” have been pushed out, she said. The Texas Republican has not been included in a debate scheduled for tomorrow on Fox News Network, for reasons the organization has not disclosed. David Chalian, ABC News’s political director, told The Times’s Michael Falcone that the network was seeking to provide the “best conversation and debate between the candidates who really have a chance to become the nominee.” Meanwhile, Mike Gravel is planning to hold yet another of his “Alternative Debates” starting at 8:30 p.m. on MCAM, a local public access channel, with a live web stream. MCAM also has an alternative debate with Daniel Imperato, and independent presidential candidate, on tonight at 7 p.m., and Mr. Paul will have a live town hall at the channel on Sunday at 5 p.m. The Republicans can be seen tonight on ABC at 7 p.m., and the Democrats debate on the network at 9 p.m. The Fox G.O.P. is on Sunday
