I'll readily admit that it does not have everything to do with warming, but it does have a great effect. If the air could easily mix up to the outer atmosphere it would allow the heat to travel easily to the outer atmosphere and then it could easily radiate to space. Convection of huge molecules carries more energy than radiation of tiny particles. As it is, the air is not only heated, but the heated air is trapped closer to the surface (at least until the whole atmosphere heated).
