I think he drains all fluids from machines before winter.

That's another option.

I recall, however, the odd January day in Sammamish when I needed to mow the lawn.

but I expect we will eventually, so hubby is outside now thinking about starting up the gen while he cleans the garage.

Depends on how often you lose power (in the '80s on the Plateau, it was all the time), but consider putting in a generator switch on your electrical panel. You can wire certain circuits to it, and alternate between running the fridge and freezer and then lights and tv.
