True, VN has even offered us a naval base. The situation with Iraq is different. The stability of the Persian Gulf is of great importance to us and to the whole world's economy. Jimmy Carter is the first President who declared the Persian Gulf a vital interest of the US which our military would be used to defend. the Brits recently pulled out of Basra and the violence there has stopped. They pulled out of Basra because the job was done. We are turning over areas to Iraqi security control as well.
