Assertiveness courses to 'help Muslim women resist Al Qaeda'

Muslim women should be sent on assertiveness training courses as part of the fight against extremism, say government ministers.

Lessons in confidence building and communication will help them resist intimidation or recruitment by Al Qaeda or other violent or hardline groups, they believe.

Money will also be poured into Islamic women's groups to try to boost their influence in Muslim areas.

Communities Secretary Hazel Blears is to give instructions that some of a £70million Government fund set up to encourage "cohesion" should be used to try to bolster the confidence of women.

But the proposals brought fierce criticism from Muslim groups. The Muslim Council of Britain - one of the organisations being consulted by ministers in their efforts to foster integration - said the Government was trying to turn women into spies.

There were complaints from Islamic leaders a year ago after then Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly proposed asking imams to report to police on extremist activity in their mosques.

Yesterday the MCB's assistant secretary-general Inayat Bunglawala said: "The Government at first wanted our imams to act as spies on young British Muslims and now they seem to want Muslim women to do the same."

Mrs Blears is to publish a document arguing that women have the potential to become a voice for moderation in Muslim communities and steer young people away from the clutches of extremist recruiters.

Women are expected to be offered work placements with business leaders and successful athletes, while funding will be made available to set up Muslim women's groups to provide a safe space for discussion.

Christian convert killed by Islamic militants
Bashir Ahmad Tantray left Islam around 10 years ago. Very active in social projects and evangelization, he was murdered by two strangers in broad daylight.
Wednesday, November 22, 2006By Asia News

Two Muslim fundamentalists have killed a Christian who converted to Islam around 10 years ago. Bashir Ahmad Tantray was murdered in broad daylight as he chatted with Muslim friends in his village, Mamoosa, in Baramulla district. He leaves behind a wife and four children, two girls and two boys.
Ghulam Rasool Tantray, his cousin, said: “Two militants enquired about the public transport system. As soon as my cousin finished talking, they killed him.” The two militants fled the scene on their motorbike.

After his conversion, Bashir dedicated himself enthusiastically to social projects and to evangelization in the area with an evangelical group. Shortly after he changed his religion, he had received threats against his life and escaped from his village, returning years later.

It is the first time that a Christian convert has been murdered in the northern state, although violence against local Christians has been on the rise for some time. Around two years ago, some Muslim militants threw grenades at the missionary school of Pulwama, while last July, a car bomb damaged another Christian school.

Sajan George, President of the Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC), said:

“He is a martyr for the faith and we can only pray that his blood may be a seed for evangelization. There is a palpable sense of fear among the people now but we will seek justice for Bashir’s death.”

The victim did not have a Christian burial: for fear of further violence, he was buried according to Muslim rites near his home.
