Nixon almost won it and Ford lost it. I recall a recent interview with an old Communist Vietnamese General was that they were close to surrendering when they stopped bombing due to the Paris peace talks. Then just when it seemed all was lost they were surprised when the Americans talked of a settlement, instead of surrender.

actually it goes back before JFK , Ike and to a lesser extent Truman had their fingers in Vietnam

LIAR. JFK did not preside over any war in Vietnam. It was a very limited military advisor program headed by Green Berets to relief the French. That's all it was and all it might have ever been if the rightwing hadn't murrdered JFK. It was also working. LBJ with his pals at Halliburton did the escalating based ona big lie (like Bush-Cheney in Iraq) , and by 1967 they knew the war was unwinnable so LBJ resigned in disgrace. But he never told the people the truth, so when Nixon got in, thanks to RFK being murderd by the far right, he kept the war going for five long years even though he too knew it was completely unwinnable.
