Look, we all know that we have amassed amazing wealth as a nation -- the shame of it is that we are squandering everything that previous generations built -- and they built it through hard work and savings, not by living beyond their means. Now the Chinese and others are doing what previous generations of Americans did -- and they are profiting from it. We are the ones pissing away our good fortune. As we go broke they are able to do just fine by serving an exploding population of increasingly educated and productive citizens of theirs and other countries. They will miss us the way a casino misses a "whale" -- but the casino does not go broke when the whale plays his last losing hand -- on the contrary, the owners of the casino keeps busy counting their money.

If Bush sends us all $500 to spend, where will that come from? He does not have a single penny to send us -- not a cent. What he can do is go to the Chinese, or the Saudis, or the Japanese, or the Russians -- and he can say "hey buddy, can you loan me a dime, I want to throw a little party to make people feel better about being broke, you know, with all the debt we have and with soaring prices for everything people use everyday and with our assets and the dollar going into the toilet" -- and it will be billed as "economic stimulus". Do you really think that this is the sort of thing that is the hallmark of a great nation? Or is it an act of desperation -- link buying a round of drinks on the titanic and the ship lists to port?
