Kennedy never waged real war in Vietnam. Never. He inherited a situation from the French and previous administration and was smart enough to create the Green Berets as well as the Peace corps and try to make the tricky situation work. His Green Berets in VN were military advisors and small garrisons. They worked a lot with local tribes and had them do a lot of the actual fighting. That was working. It was working until JFK was assassinated by the rightwing and LBJ was corrupt enough to inject ten times, then twenty times as many troops (based on lies, justg like Bush did) including the whole huge Halliburton style infrastructure which turned Vietnam into an unwinnable mess of corporate and local corruption. The main reason we could never win was the total corruption of our allies. Like in Iraq now. Half of what we put in there they would steal. Much of it would be sold to the other side on the black market. We in essence funded both sides of the war at the same time. Also just like in Iraq where we left huge ammo dumps unguarded after the invasion and our enemies got very well armed from them.
