Indeed, when Alfred Wegener proposed his theory of continental drift the oil industry sponsored a special symposium on November 15, 1926 by American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) specifically in opposition to the continental drift hypothesis.

The oil industry was funding 'Continental Drift Deniers' in 1926 just as they have more recently 'Global Warming Deniers' in order to avoid their culpability for it.
