When a Democrat takes office, we will start caring about the national debt. The interest on the debt in 2008 will exceed $600 Billion. That's just the interest.

Yes, the GDP should be scrapped as a measurement. It's old-fashioned from a time when we had supposedly infinite natural resources, so the more of them we consumed the "better". Now just the opposite is true. The more we conserve and use wisely the better.

As I've explained, GDP rewards the government for killing the Golden Goose that lays the eggs, like cutting down entire forests, etc. and rewards deficit spending. So no wonder Bush's GDP is so high, he's the biggest deficit spender in the history of the planet and is going to make the Vietnam and Reagan debts look like small potatoes.
