<<<Had this article claimed that healthy habits would mean greater longevity, which it didn't, and then failed to point out that the study didn't demonstrate that, only hinted at the possibility, then it would have been in a class with your piece.>>>

Are we reading the same article. It sure as heck proved to me that eliminating risk factors like smoking, not eating fruits and vegetables, no regular exercise, and excessive alcohol consumption increases life expectancy by 14 years.

When you observe that 20,000 people living on average 14 years longer as a result of these differences in life style, that is as much proof as I need.

Put it another way, you would have to be pretty stupid to do just the opposite of what this study demonstrated because the study failed to test specific changes and measure their impact.

That's not at all necessary for my point, which was that the argument was deceptive.

Maybe, maybe not. Hey, I didn't write the F'ing thing... just posted it. If you want to disregard it that's fine by me.

But because the study only observed people rather than testing specific changes, experts said that it would be impossible to conclude that people who suddenly adopted these healthy behaviors would automatically gain 14 years.

For example a propensity to these healthy habits may also correlate with a propensity to other healthy habits that where not tested for, it might correlate with wealth (and wealthy people do tend to live longer on the average) and better living conditions, it might correlate with having less stress, it might even correlate with genetic factors that tend to lead to longer lives.
