Intel's plan was that every individual was responsible for backing their email up. For the upper management, they assigned some low level guy in the IT department to do it. He was given a spreadsheet with the names of the people he was supposed to back up the email for. However, the very top executives were on a second tab that he didn't see and so it was never done for them...

Apparently it never occurred to anyone that simply copying the backup tapes of the email servers, or taking them out of rotation, would have been more foolproof.
