In the summer of 1968 I watched the police action from the roof of the Field Museum where the National Guard had set up their headquarters. I was 19 at the time, a long haired student at UIC (Harvard on Halsted), working at a summer job at the museum. The opening event, as seen from my vantage point, was a line of protesters charging a police line in Grant Park. I have a vivid memory of hearing the National Guard commander looking at the scene and saying, "Holy Shit!"

That was in the afternoon, right? This was in the evening right on Michigan Ave just South of Balboa (sp?) in front of the Hilton. And it was the part that the press and politicians termed "police riot".

But you saw what I saw... one of the nicest areas of the city looked like a war zone. For someone our age, it was pretty amazing. Then getting attacked by the police... well, I went down there as somewhat of a political agnostic, and came out quite different.

And I'm jealous of the job at the Field Museum... must be some great stories from that. I used to drive a Yellow cab in the city some summers. That was also 'interesting' in a Chinese proverb sort of way.
